Lions have invested $415 million in the SightFirst program to extend its services to even more people in need throughout the world. With an average cost of just $6 to help restore a person’s vision or prevent blindness, millions will be given the gift of sight.In order to improve eye health, SightFirst is committed to understanding the causes, impacts and solutions to the world’s major eye issues and diseases.
Lions Clubs International sponsor a worldwide collection and distribution of used spectacles to third world countries where the recipients are not interested in the fashion statement of the frames, but in the lenses to let them have sight. We the Lions of District 133 Ireland collect and recycle thousands of pairs of spectacles each year for distribution to the Third World.
Research has shown that among Special Olympics athletes, 68% have not had an eye examination in three years, 37% are in need of eyeglasses and 18% wear clinically incorrect eyeglasses. Lions Clubs International Foundation and Special Olympics began a partnership in 2001 to provide free vision screenings at select Special Olympics sporting events worldwide. Since the partnership began, LCI has awarded $23 million in grant funding
Humanitarian service is at the heart of LCIF and Lions’ work. Working together, Lions identify the most crucial needs and LCIF supports them in humanitarian efforts that transform lives of people around the world.
Since its founding in 1968, LCIF has awarded more than 13,000 grants totalling over $1 billion. LCIF relies on donations from Lions and their Clubs. These donations provide the vast majority of the revenue received making the Foundation a leading humanitarian organization.
One of the greatest problems facing mankind in the 21st century is the human wave of refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants fleeing natural disaster, war, poverty and terror in so many countries. Lions in District 133 Ireland are committed to fundraising for a Safe Center being built in the Lebanon at a cost of approx $100,000.
In 2014 Lions initiated the campaign – One Shot, One Life – working with the UN and other International Aid organisations to immunise children against Measles, particularly in the Third World. To be successful the immunisation program must be as near 100% in the community as is humanly possible.
The Lions Clubs Annual Holiday, primarily for the old and lonely, takes place in Trabolgan Holiday Village in June each year. Over 600 Guests, Lions and Helpers from throughout the 32 counties bookin for the week. The first Holiday was organized in 1981 by Dublin Lions Club to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of their Club and indeed the arrival of Lions in Ireland.
Lions Club members are ordinary people who do extraordinary things every day of the year. They run world-scale projects in restoring sight and preventing measles. In Ireland they operate a range of projects that includes diabetes screening, a food appeal, support for Guide Dogs, a senior citizens holiday, carers weekends- and much more.
Our annual Christmas food appeal is one of our longest running and most successful projects in the District which began in the 1980s. During December each year, Lions across Ireland collect food for the needy in our society. We get fantastic support from both large and small supermarkets around Ireland who allow us to collect food and cash in their stores prior to Christmas and great coverage from local Radio and newspapers.
We work with various agencies around the entire island of Ireland to deliver essential items like sleeping bags, hat, scarves, rain gear etc. These include but are not exclusive to Tig Linn, Cork Penny Dinners, Focus Ireland. With the onset of the coming winter, we will be relaunching our appeal to all clubs as we do every year. Also, this year, in conjunction with our usual appeal, we are launching a nationwide appeal requesting donations of knitted hats, snoods, scarves etc as this would leave us with more money to spend on sleeping bags.
The Lions Clubs carers Weekends are very necessary to family carers who look after family members 24/7. The effects on carers can be very stressful and many carers badly need respite from their caring rolls. Carers suffering from stress or anxiety can avail of counselling.
The weekends address many of the problems carers may encounter. Carer’s are made feel at ease throughout the weekends where they mingle and get to know each other in a beautiful tranquil setting in Rosses Point Co. Sligo or Ballyvaloo Co. Wexford. Throughout the weekends Carers discuss their situations in a relaxed environment and relate to each other. Many lasting friendships are mad

The Lions Youth Exchange Programme was launched to provide young people with the opportunity to learn about people and cultures other than their own, in an effort to promote world peace. Since 1961, Lions Clubs around the world have been sending and hosting young people with the purpose of providing a better understanding of people and leading to more peaceful relations worldwide.

The Youth Camp and Exchange Programme (YCE) may be the opportunity you are seeking.
This is a soccer tournament sanctioned by the FAI involving the whole of Ireland. The purpose is to promote Lionism and what we do, to the general public thro the medium of Sport. I am asking your club to get involved by sponsoring a local Soccer club in your area to participate. The first thing to do is to appoint a local member of your club to head up this youth project and to interact with a local club to see if they are interested.
For the last 30 years Lions clubs around the world have proudly sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.
The Lions Clubs in the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland have over the past two decades helped local communities in preventing Suicide. It is estimated over this period €200,000 has been invested in Suicide prevention, by Lions Clubs.
Lions Clubs Ireland have sponsored the rolling out of an anti-bullying campaign throughout the country, with particular emphasis on cyber bullying which with the advent of modern technology has become a major problem in both primary and secondary schools over the last 4 years. Click to see more
Medic Alert is a registered charity introduced to Ireland by Lions during the 1960s. For individuals who register with MedicAlert, full details of their medical conditions or allergies, medication, next of kin, doctor’s contact details and other relevant information are maintained on a secure and confidential database. Each individual is provided with a MedicAlert bracelet, watch, necklace or card on which a MedicAlert contact number is inscribed. See: www.medicalert.ie
Message in a Bottle is a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place, where,in cases of emergency, the Emergency teams can easily access them. Those who benefit most are older people, people not in good health, people living alone, people having life threatening conditions/allergies, people with disabilities,Paramedics, Gardai, Fire-fighters, Hospital Accident and Emergency, Social Services.
